Wolverine is one of the best characters ever created in fiction. I blew it by not coming up with the idea first.

My thoughts on this series as a whole have not entirely been formed yet, at least not so far as I would feel comfortable making them public. But anyway, I highly doubt that you came here to read what it is that I may or may not have thought.

Fang and Claw
After deciding to help their new friend, Bird-Brain rescue his friends from the test, the New Mutants find themselves on a semi-deserted island. They believed they were alone on the island until various Animates approach them, looking more hungry than friendly. Bird-Brain feeds them the hamburgers he brought with them, but their feast is interrupted by a calling whistle. The whistle somehow hypnotizes the animates into starting the tests. The New Mutants decide to try the tests with them, to save Bird-Brain and his friends from this madman, the Animator. Soon inside the maze, they realize the test is something to be taken serious, as they discover various bodies belonging to fallen animates. They find themselves in battle with huge animates, and dangerous traps. After the New Mutants are captured, the Animator reveals himself. He tells Bird-Brain he should have never come back, because his return trying to save his friends has cost all of their lives. He orders the animates to destroy them all!

Our Way
The Mutants return home with their deceased teammate, Douglas Ramsey, Magneto is not there when they return, as he is at the Hellfire Club searching for them. The team all deals with Doug’s death in tears and anger, and as they finally break down to call Magneto, they learn he is returning home. They turn on the TV to see a huge fight in New York and Dallas with the X-men. Illyana sees her brother, and wishes to be with him, but all of the sudden he and the other X-Men enter a building as it explodes. Just then, Magneto returns home asking where they have been. When he learns about Doug’s demise, he snaps. He grabs all of his students in the air, with his magnetic powers and asks them frantically if this is the only way that he can keep them safe. Their carelessness has cost Doug’s life, and they will not use their powers or leave the property without his permission. Upset at his lack of concern about her brother or the X-Men, Illyana teleports away to help her brother. She returns later, unable to enter Dallas, as there appears to be some mystical barrier preventing her to enter. She has the Soulsword, and tries to attack Magneto, for his lack of passion or concern. Her teammates assure her he does mean well, and ask her to send the sword back to Limbo. The New Mutants leave Magneto in the room, with the thoughts of his carelessness, and find Illyana in the attic. Illyana had thought with Magneto around standing guard, she could have a chance at a normal childhood once in awhile. But Rahne tells her they cannot afford to be children anymore. Within minutes they gather scraps of uniforms left scattered in the attic, and each don a new uniform. They joined this school, not to learn under Magneto, but Xavier. With him gone, they still follow his dream, and with Doug and the X-Men now dead, they’re all that’s left to save the world.

The End of the Beginning
The New Mutants hear battle noises in the Danger Room. They go check it out, and find a mysterious warrior destroying their equipment. None of the team knows the brutal warrior, so they attack him. It’s a hard battle, but Cable eventually manages to defeat the man. Later in the infirmary, the man introduces himself as Shatterstar. He traveled back in time to find the X-Men, to ask them defeat Mojo and Spiral. The team is once more attacked, this time by Imperial Protectorates, sent to kill Shatterstar. Eventually, they are all killed. Later, when Boom-Boom goes to fetch something to eat, she finds Feral in the kitchen! The two fight, and the New Mutants come to the rescue. Feral explains that she’s being hunted by Masque and his goons, who want to start a world with the surface world. But she herself doesn’t want a part in it, which isn’t to Masque’s liking. The New Mutants believe her and, after Cable kills Brute, Masque and Hump get the point and leave. After some rest and a shower, Cable gathers the team for a talk. Everyone agrees that they are no longer safe. Cable explains that Shatterstar, Warpath and Feral have all agreed to join the team in return for some help. He suggests they move away from the bunker, since they are no longer safe now. After a discussion, everyone agrees and they depart. Elsewhere, Stryfe returns to his troops, the Mutant Liberation Front, where he dispatches a small task force to do some damage. After that, he thinks about the coming war, which is going slower than he would like. He takes off his helmet, and is revealed to be… Cable?!
