Emigrated to Canada in 1958, where his family moved so much John attended nine schools in eleven years. Enrolled at the Alberta College of Art, he completed two and a half years of a four-year course in Fine Arts before he concluded that there was little they could offer someone wanting to be a "cartoonist".
